Frostrail Co-op: Roles, Splits and 4-Player Tips

Frostrail co-op with 1-4 players: engineer, scavenger, gunner and quartermaster roles, how to split a stop and the mistakes that kill runs.

Frostrail Co-op: Roles, Splits and 4-Player Tips

Quick answer: Frostrail supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players through Steam. One person should always own the train — engine, fuel and heat — while the others split between scavenging and fighting. The mistake every new group makes is sending all four players into the same building and leaving the Eden Engine untended.

Demo build, verified 2026-10-24

Co-op in the demo is online with Steam friends, up to four players. Dedicated servers, crossplay, matchmaking and player-count scaling are not confirmed by the developers — we mark them unknown rather than guess.

What is confirmed

Feature Status
Solo play Yes, full campaign
Online co-op Yes, up to 4 players
Join method Steam friends, invite into a campaign
Campaign seed Set when the campaign is created, shared by the group
PvP None
Crossplay (console/PC) Not confirmed
Dedicated servers Not confirmed
Matchmaking / public lobbies Not confirmed
Player-count difficulty scaling Not confirmed
Shared progression The demo has no persistent progression, so untestable

FakeFish's April 2025 FAQ confirmed the 1-4 player scope, and the October 2026 demo news repeated it. Consoles are planned only after the 1.0 release, so crossplay is a post-1.0 question at the earliest.

The four roles that actually work

1. Engineer (the one role that cannot be skipped)

Owns the Eden Engine and the heat budget: fuel in the hatch, ignition, valve setting, brake, throttle, junction switches. In a four-player group this person barely leaves the cab, and that is correct — a cold train with four players looting is a train nobody can return to.

Checklist each stop: brake on → fuel above a third → valve set → hull sealed → announce "train is warm" before anyone leaves.

2. Scavenger (metal and textile)

Goes into houses and along the rails, returns with pans, knives, shoes and crates. Carries the crowbar. Does not fight unless cornered; the whole point is speed and low weight.

Target per trip: 10+ metal scraps, 10+ textile, one food can.

3. Gunner (security)

Escorts the scavenger, clears Revenants, and holds the choke point during the reckoning. Carries the zip gun and most of the ammunition, because one person with a full gun is better than four with two rounds each.

4. Quartermaster (the force multiplier)

Stays near the train, runs the sorting table, crafts bandages, ammo and heaters, and keeps the chests organised. In a two-player group the engineer doubles as quartermaster. In a solo run you are all four, which is why solo Frostrail is a slower game.

How to split a stop in 90 seconds

  1. Engineer parks, brakes, fuels, sets heat. Calls "warm".
  2. Gunner and scavenger leave together, same direction, one building each.
  3. Quartermaster recycles the previous haul and crafts whatever the group is short of.
  4. Everyone returns when the engine's consumption gauge starts dropping fast — that is the fuel clock, not a timer on screen.
  5. Engineer re-fuels, releases the brake, drives to the next stop.

The 90-second version is the minimum viable loop. Longer stops need a runner back to the train to top up heat.

Co-op mistakes that end runs

Mistake Why it hurts Fix
Leaving the engine unattended Fuel burns out, cab goes cold, everyone returns to a dead train Engineer stays or rotates explicitly
Everyone loots the same house Four players, one loot table, three idle One building per player
Four guns, no ammo Each player crafts 6 rounds and nobody has enough One gunner, shared ammo
Nobody builds walls Heaters heat the outdoors Quartermaster seals the carriage
Overweight retreat Half speed, no sprint, Revenants catch you Cap at 38 weight, drop loot
Taking the shrine together The seal triggers on the last player out Agree exit order, or leave one outside

Communication that matters

Frostrail has no ping system in the demo, so voice chat or Steam chat is effectively required. The four calls worth standardising:

  • "Warm" — the train is heated and safe to return to
  • "Fuel low" — engineer wants logs before the next leg
  • "Contact" — Revenants engaged, with a direction
  • "Shrine" — the reckoning is about to start, everyone converges

Does co-op make the game easier?

Mechanically, yes: four players can carry four times the loot, cover four buildings at once and hold a corridor. But the train's needs do not scale down, and nobody is watching the engine while three people are looting.

The honest answer from the demo: co-op is easier if you assign roles, and harder if you do not. A disorganised group burns more fuel, builds fewer walls and dies to the same three Revenants a solo player would have handled with a choke point.

Setting up a co-op session

  1. Host creates a campaign and sets the seed.
  2. Invite through Steam friends.
  3. Do the tutorial together — the first objectives teach shared systems (sorting table, walls, heaters) that everyone needs to understand.
  4. Agree roles before the first stop, not after the first death.
  5. Keep one person on the engine at all times.

Early Access outlook

Announced systems that will change co-op:

  • Persistent progression between stops, which implies shared or per-player progression — unconfirmed which
  • Train defence fights, which will need a gunner at the train rather than in a building
  • Relics that buff the train, which create a natural "carry it home" role
  • Dedicated repair workstations, reducing the quartermaster's workload

Console support is a post-1.0 topic; crossplay has not been mentioned at all. For platform and date details see release date and Early Access and system requirements.

FAQ

How many players can play Frostrail co-op? Up to four, including the host. Steam lists single-player, multiplayer and online co-op, and the developers describe the game as built for one to four Penitent Gardeners.

Is there crossplay in Frostrail? Not confirmed. The only platform announced is Windows PC on Steam, and consoles are described as something to evaluate after the 1.0 release. With one platform there is nothing to cross-play with yet.

Can friends join an existing campaign? The demo's menus do not document mid-campaign joining, and the closed beta invited players to bring three friends from the start. Treat a co-op run as something you set up before departure.
