Frostrail crafting: sorting table and workbench loop, every demo recipe, station build order and the 2% recycling penalty the wrench fixes.
Frostrail Crafting: Recipes, Stations and Unlock Order
Quick answer: Crafting in Frostrail runs on two stations and one rule. The sorting table turns loot into scraps, the toolmaker's workbench turns scraps into tools, weapons and station kits, and recycling an item for the first time can unlock its schematic. Build the sorting table first — without it you are carrying junk you cannot use.
Recipe names and outputs below were verified in the demo. The demo does not print a full ingredient list for every item, so where a cost was not visible on screen we write unknown instead of guessing.

The crafting loop in one diagram
- Loot houses, crates and corpses.
- Feed everything you do not need into the sorting table.
- The table returns textile, metal and wood scraps and occasionally unlocks a schematic.
- Spend scraps at the toolmaker's workbench.
- Build walls, doors, heaters and stations with the mallet.
- Repeat, moving one carriage further down the line.
The critical detail: recycling is research. The first time you break down an unfamiliar item, the game can hand you a new recipe. That is how the torch schematic appeared in our run.
Every recipe we confirmed in the demo
| Item | Category | Station | Materials | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primitive club | Weapon | Hand / workbench | Wood | First melee weapon |
| Wooden mallet | Tool | Hand | Wood scraps, branches | Building and placing furniture |
| Torch | Light | Hand | Branches | Light in bunkers and at night |
| Rag bandages | Healing | Hand | Textile scraps | Roughly 35 health per use |
| Makeshift wrench | Tool | Workbench | Wood scraps + metal scraps | Repairs walls, doors, sorting table |
| Makeshift crowbar | Tool | Workbench | Metal scraps | Pries boarded bunker entrances |
| Zip gun | Weapon | Workbench | Metal scraps (+ wood, exact cost unknown) | Single-shot firearm |
| Scrap ammunition | Ammo | Workbench | Metal scraps, 6 rounds per craft | Zip gun ammo |
| Wooden chest | Storage | Mallet placement | Wood scraps | Inventory overflow |
| Wooden door | Structure | Mallet placement | Wood scraps | Seals a compartment |
| Wooden exterior wall | Structure | Mallet placement | Wood scraps | Turns an open carriage into a room |
| Small heater | Heat | Mallet placement | ~5 metal scraps | Heats an enclosed space |
| Sorting table | Station | Mallet placement | Wood + metal scraps (exact cost unknown) | Recycling and schematic unlocks |
| Toolmaker's workbench | Station | Mallet placement | Wood + metal scraps (exact cost unknown) | Tools, weapons, ammo |
| Mess workstation | Station | Mallet placement | Unknown | Food preparation station |
| Altar of mending | Station | Mallet placement | Unknown | Function not explained in the demo |
Two more items appeared in the build menu without a confirmed recipe: a zipline and a wooden mallet variant. We list them here only so you know they exist; do not plan a build around them until Early Access.
Station priority: what to craft first
1. Sorting table (first)
Without it, every looted shoe and pan is dead weight in a 40 kg inventory. With it, junk becomes the entire material economy. Place it right inside the carriage door.
2. Toolmaker's workbench (second)
The wrench comes from here, and the wrench is what keeps the sorting table alive once it starts losing 2% processing speed per item. The workbench also gates the zip gun.
3. Walls and a door (third)
Not crafting in the strict sense, but placement work that belongs to the same budget. A sealed carriage is what makes heaters worth building.
4. Small heaters (fourth)
About five metal scraps each. One per small room, placed away from the door.
5. Storage and comfort (last)
Chest, mess workstation, altar of mending. Useful, but none of them stop you freezing or dying.
The 2% rule and why the wrench matters
Every item the sorting table processes reduces its processing speed by 2%. That is not a durability bar you can ignore: after fifty items the table is running at half speed, and recycling a full inventory takes twice as long while you stand in the cold.
- Repair with the makeshift wrench before long recycling sessions.
- Batch your recycling: one trip, one session, one repair.
- Do not recycle in a bunker. Drag loot back to the train where the station and heat are.
Schematics and unlocks
The demo's unlock model is discovery-based rather than level-based:
- Recycling an item type for the first time can unlock its schematic (we unlocked the torch this way).
- Tutorial objectives hand you recipes directly: club, mallet, workbench, wrench, wall, heater, zip gun.
- Looted notes and handbook entries appear in the Handbook tab; we did not confirm a recipe unlock from a note (unknown).
There is no crafting skill tree, no XP and no recipe vendor in the demo.
Materials, in order of scarcity
| Material | Source | Bottleneck? |
|---|---|---|
| Metal scraps | Pans, knives, tools, metal boxes, broken fixtures | Yes — everything combat-related needs it |
| Wood scraps | Logs recycled, furniture, crates | No, but competed for by fuel and building |
| Branches | Recycling logs, trees, ground loot | No |
| Textile scraps | Shoes, clothing, curtains | Mild — bandages and insulation |
| Food | Cans, berries, house kitchens | Depends on route length |
The full conversion table is in resources and recycling. If you are deciding between a heater and ammunition, the answer is almost always the heater — see train upgrades for why.
What Early Access will add
The store page promises dedicated weapon stations and storage stations; the Spring 2026 update promised reworked dungeon layouts, relics and dedicated repair workstations. None of those are in the demo, and no recipe list for them has been published. When Early Access launches in Q4 2026 this page will carry the full recipe database with verified costs.
Until then: beginner guide for the first hour, weapons for what the workbench output is actually good at.
FAQ
Where do I craft in Frostrail? At the workbenches on the train. The toolmaker's workbench unlocks tools and weapons, the mess workstation handles food, and the altar of mending handles healing items. Hand recipes such as the primitive club work anywhere.
How do I unlock new recipes? Recycling objects at the sorting table can unlock schematics, which is how the torch recipe appeared in our demo session. Others come from the tutorial and from workbenches as you build them.
Do crafting stations break? They wear out rather than break outright. Each use of the sorting table costs 2% processing speed, and a makeshift wrench repairs the station back up. Plan a repair stop before a long scavenging run.
