Frostrail enemies: Revenant aggro, the charge when shot, group sizes, melee and zip gun counters, and which enemy types are still unconfirmed.
Frostrail Enemies: Revenant Behaviour and How to Kill Them
Quick answer: The demo has exactly one enemy type: the Revenant. They are humanoid, ragged, and travel in small groups around the rails and the abandoned village. Shooting one makes it charge; the reliable answer is a choke point, a melee stagger, and a zip gun shot you can afford to miss. Everything else you have read about Frostrail bosses or "special infected" is not in this build.
No enemy health bars, damage numbers or armour values are visible in the demo. We describe behaviour we observed and mark unconfirmed enemy types explicitly.

What a Revenant actually does
| Behaviour | What we saw | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Patrol | Wanders near the tracks and between village houses, alone or in pairs | You can often walk past at a distance |
| Aggro on noise | Gunshots pull nearby Revenants toward you | Never fire "just to check" in a village |
| Charge when shot | A hit that does not kill triggers a sprint toward the shooter | Shoot from cover, not from the open |
| Group pressure | The tutorial spawns three in one area; villages add more | Melee is only safe one at a time |
| Melee attack | Heavy swing, short range, no wind-up animation you can read at first | Backpedal, do not trade |
| Lootable corpse | Bodies can be searched | Check every body; they carry scraps and cloth |
| No ranged attack | We never saw a Revenant throw or shoot | Distance is armour |
How much health do they have?
Unknown. The demo exposes no health value. What we can say is ordinal: a primitive club drops one in several solid hits, a metal hammer in fewer, and a zip gun round does not one-shot. Do not trust any Frostrail wiki publishing exact Revenant HP — the number is not in the build.
The counters that work
Choke points beat open ground
Revenants path straight at you and attack in melee. Stand in a doorway or between two train carriages and only one can reach you at a time. In the open, a group of three surrounds you and the second hit comes from behind.
Melee stagger, then reposition
The club and hammer both stagger. The rhythm is: swing, step back, swing, step back. Trading hits loses, because your health does not regenerate while you are cold or Overcumbered.
One shot, one retreat with the zip gun
Fire, then move behind cover to reload. The reload is long enough that standing still is a death sentence. If you have three Revenants converging, shoot the closest, retreat through a door, and finish it in melee while the others queue behind it.
Noise discipline in villages
Loot houses with the crowbar out, not the gun. Every gunshot is an aggro beacon and every round is metal scraps you could have spent on a heater. See weapons and ammo economy.
Where they spawn
- Around the tutorial station — the first three are part of the scripted objective chain.
- The abandoned village — pairs between houses, often near lootable crates.
- Bunker approaches — the boarded entrance area had at least one patrolling.
- Inside bunkers — dark corridors, close range, no room to backpedal.
Spawn density is not fixed: the demo campaign accepts a seed at the start, so layouts and patrol patterns differ between runs. If your village is empty, another run's will not be.
Revenants and the bunker shrine
Inside the bunker network you can find a shrine with a warning that taking it "is to call the reckoning upon yourself". The demo ties this to a defence event: you take the relic-like object and something comes for you. Our run ended with Revenants converging on the room we had barricaded. The full sequence, including the sealed-exit rule, is in bunkers and shrines.
Whatever the reckoning is, it is not a single Revenant. Take the shrine with a loaded zip gun, a hammer, bandages and a clear route back to the train.
Enemies confirmed for Early Access (and not yet shown)
FakeFish has been explicit that the Revenant is the low end of the threat scale — the developers described them as cannon fodder for something worse in the original announcement. The Spring 2026 update also mentioned new enemy variants, without naming them.
What that means concretely:
| Enemy | Status |
|---|---|
| Revenant (basic) | Confirmed, in demo |
| Revenant variants | Announced in the Spring 2026 update, not identifiable in the demo |
| Larger "something worse" | Teased by the developers, no name, no footage |
| Human enemies | Not confirmed |
| Wildlife | Not confirmed |
| Train-attacking enemies | Train defence fights are announced as a system, attacker type unknown |
We will not invent names or health values for any of these. When Early Access lands in Q4 2026, this page gets a real bestiary with verified entries.
Co-op changes the enemy math
With four players, a Revenant group stops being a threat and becomes a resource: one player holds a choke point, another loots, a third keeps the engine fed. Enemy scaling with player count is unconfirmed — the demo's co-op did not expose a difficulty setting. Roles and split-up plans are in co-op roles.
Quick reference: first-hour enemy plan
- Craft the primitive club before you leave the station.
- Fight the tutorial Revenant in the open, not in a corner.
- Loot every body for metal and cloth.
- Do not shoot in the village unless you have an escape route.
- Craft the zip gun before the bunker, not before the village.
For the order of objectives around these fights, read the demo walkthrough. For what to do with the loot afterwards, see crafting.
FAQ
What enemies are in the Frostrail demo? Revenants, the corrupted humanoids that appear in small groups around stations and bunkers. Steam's content notes also mention wolves as hostile creatures, and the developers say worse things than Revenants exist deeper in the game.
Do Revenants respawn? The demo does not show a respawn timer in the interface, and cleared areas stayed empty during our session. Treat any cleared route as temporarily safe rather than permanently safe, especially after the train moves on.
How do I kill a Revenant efficiently? Hit first and from range if you can. A Revenant that survives a zip gun shot charges, so reloading in the open is how you die; back toward a door or a corner, finish it with melee and search the body for scraps.
